Post-Brexit Import Checklist
for UK Golf Apparel Brands

A step-by-step guide to importing custom golf apparel from China into the United Kingdom — covering HS classification, CDS customs declarations, duty and VAT calculations, compliance documentation, logistics timelines, and VAT reclaim procedures.

Key Numbers at a Glance

MFN Duty: 12%
Import VAT: 20%
Sea freight: 28–35 days
Clearance (DDP): 24–48 hrs
01

Classify Your HS Commodity Codes

Requirement Status / Value Details & Notes
Golf polo shirts (knitted, synthetic) HS 6105.20 Men's/boys' shirts of man-made fibres, knitted
Golf polo shirts (knitted, cotton) HS 6105.10 Men's/boys' shirts of cotton, knitted
Golf trousers (synthetic) HS 6103.43 Trousers of synthetic fibres, knitted
Golf mid-layers & sweaters HS 6110.30 Jerseys, pullovers of man-made fibres, knitted
Golf caps & visors HS 6505.00 Headgear of textile materials
Golf gloves HS 6116.93 Gloves of synthetic fibres

Wrong HS code = container held at £40–80/day demurrage. Use the UK Global Tariff tool at gov.uk/trade-tariff to verify before shipping.

02

Calculate Your Duty & VAT

Requirement Status / Value Details & Notes
MFN Duty Rate (China-origin apparel) 12% Applied to CIF value (Cost + Insurance + Freight)
Import VAT 20% Applied to (CIF value + Duty total). VAT-registered businesses reclaim this via quarterly HMRC return.
Example calculation £1 per unit CIF value £10,000 → Duty £1,200 → VAT on £11,200 = £2,240 → Total landed before reclaim = £13,440. Effective cost after VAT reclaim = £11,200.

Always use CIF value, not FOB. Customs use CIF — if you budget on FOB you'll be 15–20% short.

03

Prepare CDS Declaration

Requirement Status / Value Details & Notes
EORI number Required Economic Operators Registration and Identification number. Apply at gov.uk/eori. Takes 3–5 working days.
Commercial invoice Required Must show: seller & buyer details, HS codes, country of origin, CIF value, Incoterms (DDP), currency (GBP).
Packing list Required Carton-level breakdown: quantity, dimensions, weight per carton. Must match commercial invoice.
Bill of Lading / AWB Required Issued by carrier. Sea freight = Bill of Lading. Air freight = Air Waybill.
Certificate of Origin Recommended Not strictly required for China-UK under MFN, but HMRC can request it. Included in LeelineWear compliance pack.
Supplier's Declaration Recommended Supplier-confirmed country of origin. Prevents HMRC challenges on preferential vs non-preferential origin.

Your freight forwarder or customs broker submits the CDS entry. At LeelineWear, our UK partner submits before the container departs China — goods clear within 48 hours of docking.

04

Ensure Compliance Documentation

Requirement Status / Value Details & Notes
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Essential Covers UK REACH chemical compliance for textiles. Tested at ISO 17025-accredited lab.
BS EN ISO 3758 care labels Mandatory English-language fibre composition and care instructions on every garment. No re-labelling at your UK warehouse.
BSCI Social Audit Recommended Supports Modern Slavery Act Section 54 due diligence. Include in your annual slavery statement.
GRS Certificate If applicable Global Recycled Standard — required if you market products as containing recycled content.
ISO test reports Recommended Colour fastness (ISO 105-B02), dimensional stability (ISO 6330), pilling (ISO 12945-2). M&S and John Lewis intake requires these.
Declaration of Conformity Recommended Not legally required for adult golf apparel (UKCA only applies to PPE/children's sleepwear), but UK retail intake teams expect it.

At LeelineWear we provide a single compliance PDF per shipment — every certificate, test report, and supplier form in one file. This has passed intake at 30+ UK retail locations.

05

Plan Your Logistics Timeline

Requirement Status / Value Details & Notes
Sea freight (China → UK) 28–35 days Shanghai/Ningbo to Felixstowe/Southampton/London Gateway. Most cost-effective for orders 100+ units.
Air freight (China → UK) 5–8 days For last-minute corporate events or re-stock emergencies. Volume-dependent cost premium.
Customs clearance (DDP) 24–48 hours With pre-submitted CDS declaration. No demurrage if cleared within port free time (typically 5–7 days).
UK final-mile delivery 2–4 days From port to your door, 3PL, or Amazon FBA centre. Tracked, signed-for delivery.
Total door-to-door (sea, DDP) 35–42 days From production completion to your UK address. Plan 60 days from order placement to be safe.

For spring/summer drops, place orders by mid-January for March delivery. For autumn/winter, mid-July for September delivery. UK golf retail floors reset in March and September.

06

Reclaim Your Import VAT

Requirement Status / Value Details & Notes
Who can reclaim VAT-registered Only UK VAT-registered businesses. If you're not yet registered, factor the 20% as a real cost.
What you need C79 certificate + invoice HMRC issues monthly C79 certificates showing import VAT paid. Match this against your supplier's VAT-compliant invoice.
How to reclaim Box 4 of VAT return Enter the C79 import VAT figure in Box 4 of your quarterly VAT return. HMRC offsets it against your output VAT liability.
Timing Same quarter C79 typically arrives 3–6 weeks after goods clear. If it misses your current return, claim in the next quarter — you have 4 years.

Keep digital copies of every C79 and commercial invoice. HMRC can audit import VAT reclaims up to 4 years back. LeelineWear's invoice format is designed to match C79 line items exactly.
